چکیده

– The Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) is one of the most common shorebirds in the western hemisphere, with a global population of about of 3–3.5 million birds. The species breeds primarily in western Alaska, and spends the non-breeding season along the Pacific coast from California to Perú, and the Atlantic coast from North Carolina to Surinam. The largest concentrations occur in northwestern México and in Panamá. Males spend the winter farther north than females and juveniles are disproportionately represented on the northern and southern edges of the distribution. We recently documented a latitudinal difference in life-history tactics of wintering Western Sandpiper. In northwestern México, nearly all sandpipers prepare for northward migration by gaining mass and molting into alternate plumage. In Panamá, most adults, but few, if any, first-year birds do so. Instead, they spend their yearling summer in predominantly basic plumage on the non-breeding grounds. To compensate for not breeding during their first year, we expected more southerly birds to have higher survivorship rates. As predicted, mark-recapture studies show that the apparent annual survival rate of male western sandpipers at Punta Banda, México was lower than that in Chitré, Panamá ______________ Current address: Institute of Ocean Sciences, P.O. Life history varies with migratory distance in western sandpipers Calidris mauri

The propensity of migratory waders to remain on the non-breeding grounds during the arctic breeding season (‘‘oversummer’’) in their first biological year of life (‘‘juveniles’’) may be latitude, and thus migratory distance dependent. We compared the extent of preparation for northward migration of western sandpipers Calidris mauri spending the non-breeding season in México and Panamá during 19...

Foraging behaviour of non-breeding Western Sandpipers Calidris mauri as a function of sex, habitat and flocking

Individuals within a population may vary considerably in the way they exploit available food resources. If the sexes differ in the size of their feeding apparatus, there can be differences in foraging behaviour and habitat use, hence one sex may be more susceptible to competition. We examined relationships between sexual dimorphism in bill size and foraging behaviour, and habitat and microhabit...

Flight performance of western sandpipers, Calidris mauri, remains uncompromised when mounting an acute phase immune response.

Migratory birds have been implicated in the spread of some zoonotic diseases, but how well infected individuals can fly remains poorly understood. We used western sandpipers, Calidris mauri, to experimentally test whether flight is affected when long-distance migrants are mounting an immune response and whether migrants maintain immune defences during a flight in a wind tunnel. We measured five...

Migratory Birds Make

sions about site settlement on both breeding and nonbreeding grounds. Each year a fraction of surviving individuals return to sites occupied in previous years. The accumulation of capture histories, and the widespread distribution of capture–recapture software to analyze such data (Lebreton et al. 1992) have lead to a proliferation of estimates of apparent annual survival rates for migratory bi...

Extrinsic and Intrinsic Sources of Variation in Plasma Lipid Metabolites of Free-living Western Sandpipers

•Plasma lipid metabolites may be useful indicators of mass changes in migratory birds. To test utility of plasma metabolites in field studies, we examined effects of several extrinsic (bleed time, time of day, location) and intrinsic (body mass, sex, age, migratory state) factors on plasma concentrations of triglycérides (TRIG), glycerol (GLYC), and B-OHbutyrate (BUTY) in free-living Western Sa...
